Monday, 13th of April 2020, Transtel Research Division held an online course which presented Dr. Eng. Khoirul Anwar as the speaker. The topic of this course is “Understanding Some Basic Principles of Communications: Theory and Programming”. The course was held using Zoom application and the audience of this course are the lecturers of Telecommunication Engineering Department, Telkom University, especially the lecturers from Transtel Research Division. During the course, some important issues in mobile communication technology are discussed.
There are several important conclusions which can be taken from this discussion.
- Capacity cannot be increased, the ones that can be increased are throughput and data rate (for example using MIMO).
- Frequency selective fading is not considered as the enemy in OFDM. With the help of diversity technique, frequency selective fading can be beneficial to wireless communication performance.
- Cyclic Prefix is the most important thing in OFDM system because it can mitigate the Inter-Symbol Interference (ISI).
- Eb/N0 is used to compare several different technologies, while SNR is used for data rate and performance comparison.
